Have you seen the REAL Tasmania ?

The weather in Tasmania is often very changeable and for this reason it is imperative that members, present and prospective, acquaint themselves with the equipment list provided elsewhere in this document together with a suggested individual first aid kit.

You will find our current walks program within.

Our Club is a member of The Federation of Tasmanian Bushwalking Clubs.

TASMANIA

Tasmania, a State of Australia, is basically at latitude 42°S and 146°E, in the path of the winds known as the Roaring Forties.

It is 67,800kmsē in area, representing 0.88% of the land mass of Australia.

Its population is now about 500,000 mainly distributed around 4 centers, Hobart in the south, Launceston in the north and the cities of Burnie and Devonport in the north west.

It has a temperate climate, but can experience snow at higher elevations and the west coast at any time of year.

Rainfall in the west is about 2,500 mm per annum and about 500 mm per annum in the east.

It is ideal for walking, trekking, rambling or whatever you call it but for the backpackers, always carry your wet weather gear, thermals, tent and sleeping bag. The weather can change dramatically within the space of 4 hours.

The highest mountain is Mt. Ossa (1671m) situated alongside the 85 kms long 'Overland Track'.

Air travel to the State is mainly via Launceston and Hobart but regional flights also operate to / from Devonport and Burnie. Sea travel to the State is via Melbourne - Devonport, mainly a daytime service.

Outdoor shops can be found in all the cities mentioned above.

Enjoy your stay.
